The Development of Herbicides for Corn in China

Corn is a main crop in China which has a very long history while the application of herbicides in corn field can date back to 1960s.

There are some important stages to sum up about the development of corn herbicides use in China and each period has the representative herbicide.

Important stages and representative herbicides:

Stage 1: Atrazine
Atrazine is the first herbicide widely used. Because of the low cost, broad control and safety to corn, Atrazine is still one of the worldwide used herbicides on corn. Although some resistence problem occured, the mixture products of atrazine are still very popular among farmers.

Stage 2: Amides, Triazines and their mixture

Stage 3: Nicosulfuron (the start of post-emrgence herbicides)
Nicosulfuron is the first post-emergence corn herbicide introduced from abroad when there is a problem of the pre-plant or pre-emergence herbicide that they are affected by the soil and environment a lot.
Now the safe Nicosulfuron is lagely used to deal with the crop injury when Nicosulfuron is applied at the cron stage before 3 leaves and 5 leaves and applied under high temperature.

Stage 4: Many mixture products

Stage 5: Mesotrione and other new products
Mesotrione and Nicosulfuron are two products welcomed by different corn areas in China. It is interesting to see totally different views about the efficacy of Mesotrione. There are some problems about the retailers when they give farmers wrong information about the application time which make the users compain about the return to green problem. Anyway, the safety to corn is no doubt a strong point.

The new applications of old products:

Serious weeds come out especially some uncommon broadleaves and sedges. Bentazone give good control of the weeeds already have resistance against sulfonylurea herbicides. Another unmatched advantage Bentazone has is that the Gramineae crop and Legume crop have good tolerance towards it, which is suitable for the mode of interplant.

Dicamba is a good choice for field with many broadleafe weeds, especially filled with the headache weeds like Xanthium strumarium, Cirsium setosum and Convolvulus arvensis.

The new products deserve attention:

Bayer released both the single and mixture products of Isoxaflutole. Corvus (Thiencarbazone-methyl+Isoxaflutole) herbicide is with a technology of herbicide safener cyprosulfomide. It can offer burdown, residue and reactivation for consistent performance all season long.
This product gains more and more attention as it becomes already off-patent or will be off-patent soon worldwide.

The purple nutsedge or Cyperus rotundus L. is a problematic weed in many corn plant areas in China. Halosulfuron-methyl is high effcient against broadleaves and sedge while has no control towards grasses. Halosulfuron-methly can eradicate the purple nutsedge both the leave and root, and decrease the re-germination of the weeds. It has a long residue effect which means one application is enough in a plant season.
