Helicoverpa armigera is a polyphagous and adaptive pest that currently attacks several crops like soy, cotton, maize, common beans, chick peas, flax, sunflower, winter grains, citrus, wheat, barley, oats and sorghum.

This organism is originally from Africa and it currently threatens crops in Asia, Europe and Oceania. It was identified in South America in February of 2013. And these days it is detected in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil‏

Important characteristics found concerning this plague are a high level of resistance to insecticides, high mobility and an elevated reproduction rate with females laying 1000 to 1500 eggs.

Control:

1、Use of traps: Pheromone traps are sensitive to the detection of initial populations; more specific and make counting easier and quicker.light traps is useful in the detection of species present in determined areas and to learn about population fluctuation throughout the crop cycle.

2、Use of resistant materials like genetically modified plants

3、Biological control: Releasing natural enemies like the Trichogramma pretiosum fungus.

4、Insecticide application: Flubendiamide, acephate, methomyl, Bacillus thuringiensis, dimethoate, chlorantraniliprole and fipronil.
