Soybean Fungus Management
Phytophthora root and stem rot

Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRSR) of soybean is a disease that can be a significant problem in wet years. Cooler-than-normal temperatures, frequent rainfall, and poorly-drained soil favor this disease.

It is caused by the oomycete plant pathogen Phytophthora sojae. This water mold can infect seeds, seedlings, and plants in all reproductive stages of growth when soil conditions favor pathogen development. This disease may cause seed rot, damping-off, root and stem rot.

1、 Hybrid selection: Several types of resistance have been described in the P. sojae-soybean pathosystem: R-gene mediated resistance, root resistance, and partial resistance.

2、 Cultural management: Soil tillage and placing drain tiles in fields either in combination or alone. But rotation and tillage are not effective since fungus P. sojae are capable of surviving for long periods of time in soil.

3、 Fungicide application: Do seed treatments to manage P. sojae and prevent early season seed decay and damping-off. Mefenoxam and metalaxyl are suggested.
