Rice Panicle mite

Panicle rice mite (Steneotarsonemus spinki) injures rice plants both directly by feeding on cells of rice leaves, stems and kernels and indirectly by vectoring and/or facilitating the establishment of pathogens.

The panicle rice mite was reported in the continental United States in 2007. Significant crop losses have been attributed to this mite, particularly in the presence of sheath rot and bacterial panicle blight, in many tropical rice growing areas of the world. The combination of the mite and the diseases that leads to crop losses of 80 percent or more.

The panicle mite is present throughout rice-growing areas of the Caribbean and Central America, including Mexico. It may have entered the United States in rice seedlings shipped from winter nurseries in those countries. It is an important pest throughout tropical regions of Asia, specifically China and Taiwan where it has been destructive. Rice panicle mite is not airborne, but it can be spread by clothing, farm machinery or infested rice seed.

Control:
1、 Scout your field: Looking for the slight symptoms with bacterial panicle blight and sheath rot and examine the inside of the leaf sheath. Mites look like small grains of sugar to the unaided eye. Early treatment is better.

2、 Natural enemies: Predatory mites may provide some level of protection.

3、 Insecticide application: Parathion, Dicofol, Dimethoate, Isoprocarb, Dichlorvos and Thiophanate.
