Rice white-tip nematode

There is a characteristic whitening of the top 3-5 cm of the leaf tips, which later become necrotic, and a crinkling and distortion of the flag leaf enclosing the panicle; the latter is reduced in size, as are the grains. Symptoms may be confused with calcium and magnesium deficiency.

Rice white-tip nematode (A. besseyi) feeds on the plant tissue externally. This nematode is most often associated with a disease in which the leaves of the rice plant turn white in the meristematic regions followed by necrosis. These nematodes can also cause stunting and sterility with yield losses of up to 50% reported.
