Brazil Anvisa changes paraquat resolution

Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) decided to change two topics in the Collegiate Directorship Resolution No. 177, which legislates on the prohibition of active ingredient paraquat in Brazil and the transitory measures about risk mitigation. The alteration was announced after the meeting that was held on November 28.

As a desiccant, the use of the product will be authorized for three years prior to the total ban on the molecule if it does not present new scientific evidence to exclude the mutagenic potential of paraquat in germ cells, and this guarantees the negligent exposure at all stages of possible contact with the product.

The deadline established to attack the Term of Risk Acknowledgement and Responsibility to the obligatory agronomic recipe of the active ingredient has also been changed. In the first resolution edition, the deadline was 60 days. Now, it has been extended to 180 days.

During cotton production, paraquat is used mainly for the destruction of the ryegrass and tigueras and for no-tillage systems. It was not applied as a desiccant before the harvest. The decision is important, because it can give more time to the rural producers in Brazil’s major production regions, in the case of several crops, including soybeans, rice, corn and cotton. The active ingredient has been a topic of controversy in other countries too.
