Brazil extends emergency use of emamectin benzoate against H. armigera in six states

The deadline for phytosanitary emergency in the six Brazilian states of Bahia, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Piauí was extended. The measure was published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) on Monday (11.06) through Decree No. 2,293 published in the Official Union Gazette.

The period of the phytosanitary emergency stipulated by Mapa was extended until July 30, 2018. With this decision, action will be taken for the implementation of a suppression plan for the plague and the adoption of phytosanitary measures to combat Helicoverpa armigera, according to the provisions of Law No. 1,109 of November 6, 2013.

In practice, this means the official release of the use of insecticides based on emamectin benzoate is approaching, although it is still in the process of definitive registration in Brazil. Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) just approved Syngenta’s emamectin benzoate and its formulated product Proclaim 50® on November 6. The substance, according to several experts, is the most effective active ingredient for the control of the pest, but its use is opposed by environmental activists.

“The sanitary emergency has to be considered to consolidate the prevention of crop destruction and combat the plague. The measure aims to continue with Benzoate Emamectin in case of emergency to eliminate the risk of crop losses in west Bahia to Helicoverpa,” affirmed Júlio Cezar Busato, president of the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers.
