Thrips are sucking insects that feed on vital juice of plants and damage the fruit, leaves, shoot and the appearance of plant.

Thrips also carry fungus or virus when feeding on plants. And this could lead to more damage to plants than insect injury only. So some mixtures of insecticide and fungicide also applied to control thrips.
In China, the main hosts of thrips include rice, ornamental like rose, chieh-qua (a variety of Benincasa hispida), cotton, eggplant, maize, cucumber and soybean.
To control trips, people used to use malathion, isocarbophos (organophosphate) and carbosulfan (carbamate) on rice and imidacloprid (neonicotinoid) on chieh-qua. Now many new products are in the list, such as spinosid and spinetoram (biological), and thiamethoxam (neonicotinoid).
Thiamethoxam has 18 registrations in China to deal with thrip. We can say thiamethoxam is the most popular and excellent pesticide to control thrips on China market. It is widely used on rice crop, ornamentals, chieh-qua and cotton.
More information about Thiamethoxam : Systemic insecticide, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonists with contact and stomach poison, activates plant resistance proteins to make plant with robust stem and root, and grow better.
